Patience — Foundational Biblical Doctrine
OPENING WORD
Patience is a walk before it is anything else. A child does not walk in a day: first he crawls on his hands and knees; then his father takes him by the arms and teaches him to walk, step by step; then he walks alone; then he grows, and he runs. And the person who runs well runs a race, and the race has an end, and at the end a crown. Patience is like that. The Greek word is hupomone (G5281, patience) — Strong's says, cheerful (or hopeful) endurance, constancy — and it is built from two words, G5259, under, and G3306, to abide: an abiding under. It has a companion, makrothumia (G3115, longsuffering) — long of spirit, slow to become angry. The Hebrew calls the waiting qavah (H6960, wait) — Strong's says, to bind together, like a twisted cord — the waiting soul is bound to God like a cord; and the patient person is arek (H750, patient) — long: long of spirit, and slow to anger. This study carries patience through a person's whole journey: how he finds it when he can only crawl; how he walks in it once he has it; how he runs the race set before him with patience, and offers it up like a soldier in God's army; and how he crosses the line at the end, where the promise is received, the crown is held tightly, and the word of our God stands forever. THREE QUESTIONS THIS STUDY ANSWERS:
1. Where is patience found, and how does a person first come to it?
2. What should a person do with patience once they have it, and how is it lived out day by day?
3. How does the race end — what does patience receive at the finish line, and what lasts forever?
(My personal thoughts — notice how the two words are built. Strong's says hupomone (G5281, patience) rests on two words — G5259, under, and G3306, to abide — an abiding under: the patient person stays under the weight until the work is finished. And makrothumia (G3115, longsuffering) rests on G3117, long, and G2372, wrath — long before anger: the patient person is long of spirit, and does not get angry quickly. The first carries a burden; the second waits out a season. And both are translated patience: in Hebrews 12:1 we run with patience (G5281), and in Hebrews 6:12 we inherit through faith and patience (G3115) — the race calls for the abiding under, and the promise calls for the long spirit. One line holds them both together — all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness (Colossians 1:11).)
(My personal thoughts — qavah (H6960, wait) is Strong's to bind together, like a cord twisted from many strands; and its daughter is tiqvah (H8615, expectation) — literally a cord, and so, hope. The waiting in scripture is not empty sitting; it is a binding of the soul to God, until the waiting itself becomes a cord that holds: your expectation will not be cut off (Proverbs 23:18). And arek (H750, patient) simply means LONG — long of spirit, slow to anger; the same word appears in the LORD's own name, when he calls himself merciful and gracious, longsuffering (Exodus 34:6). The patient person wears his Father's likeness.)
1. CRAWLING — HOW TO FIND IT
(My personal thoughts — every walk begins low, and no one is born fully grown in patience. It must first be FOUND; and these witnesses show where: it is found in the scriptures, it is given by the God of patience, and it is worked in you by the testing of your faith. A baby cannot run; he can cry, and he can wait to be picked up. Start there. And notice this above all: before you ever waited for God, God waited for you.)

The trial is not sent to break you; it is the working of patience in you. And holokleros (G3648, entire) means whole in every part — let it finish, and no part of you will be lacking.)

(My personal thoughts — three GOODS stand together in one place: the LORD is good to those who wait; it is good to hope and quietly wait; it is good to carry the yoke in one's YOUTH. duwmam (H1748, quietly wait) is Strong's still, silently — the quiet waiting is a still waiting, not a complaining one. And the yoke is placed on early: patience learned young is carried lightly. Begin low, begin small, and begin; then rise to your feet, and walk.)
2. WALKING — WHAT TO DO WITH IT WHEN THOU HAST IT
(My personal thoughts — the baby is on his feet; now comes the walk. Patience is not something to store in a chest; it is a garment to be PUT ON, and a way to be walked in, day by day, among people. Notice the two tasks of this stage in the witnesses: possess your soul with it, and put it on toward everyone — because the walk of patience is walked among fellow believers, and among those who test you.)
(My personal thoughts — ktaomai (G2932, possess) is Strong's to get, to acquire, to own. A person's own soul is held by his patience: lose the patience, and the soul is carried where it does not want to go. Take hold of your own house first; then walk out the door.)

And sterizo (G4741, establish) is Strong's to set fast — a heart set fast does not wander from the way. Now get ready for action; the race is ahead of you.)
3. RUNNING THE RACE — YIELD IT LIKE A SOLDIER IN GOD'S ARMY
(My personal thoughts — now the walk becomes a race, and the race a war. Notice the great word of this stage: the race is run WITH PATIENCE — and the race-word itself, see the tag under the first witness, G73, is Strong's conflict, contention, fight, race: to run this race IS to fight this fight. God's runner is God's soldier: he endures hardship, he does not get entangled, and he offers the parts of his body to God — and the instruments he offers, see the tag, G3696, are weapons of war in the old language.)

When your patience grows weak, think about HIM; the looking is the strength.)

(My personal thoughts — the runner and the soldier are the same person. The runner lays aside every weight; the soldier does not get entangled: both travel light, and both do it for the eyes of ONE — the one who chose him. Patience offered to God is a soldier's patience: it stands firm when the flesh wants to run away, the way a soldier stands his ground in the evil day.)

4. THE FINISH LINE — PATIENCE, AND THE WORD, ABIDETH FOR EVER
(My personal thoughts — every race has an end, and this end is not a wall; it is a receiving. Hear what stands beyond the line for the patient man: the promise inherited, the crown given, the expectation that will not be cut off — and beneath it all, the word that promised them all, which lasts forever. The patient man and the abiding word belong to each other: the one who does the will of God lasts forever, just like the word he kept.)

In the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter is established: the trial is the workman, patience is the work, and its worth is more than gold.)

And the real thing is greater than the shadow: one greater than Job has suffered, and left us an example — hupogrammos (G5261, example), Strong's a copy placed underneath, to trace over — so that you would follow his STEPS. The walk of patience is a walk in steps already printed; follow them to the end, and the end is mercy.)

The race ran with it and offered it up: run with patience, endure hardship as a good soldier, and if we suffer, we will also reign with him. And the finish line receives by it: through faith and patience inherit the promises; surely there is an end, and your expectation will not be cut off. Now hear the two names that stand at the line: the God of ALL GRACE, who after you have suffered a while makes you perfect, establishes, strengthens, and settles you; and the God of HOPE, who fills you with all joy and peace in believing. The one who taught you to walk will bring you over the line — after the suffering, the settling; and hope does not put us to shame. Walk on, and wait well: the Lord is near.)
